Good writers are rare. Entertaining writers even more so.

Those writers that we return to day after day to be entertained and amazed spend years honing their craft and concentrate on the shape and form of words almost to the exclusion of all else.

Do you consider yourself one of those rare sentient beings? An excellent writer?

Millions of articles are posted on the internet on a daily basis. Opinions and twists abound in comment forms and forums. Social Networking is cluttered with the noise of mediocrity as the citizens of the world all compete to be noticed and, at the end of the day, sell something.

Specialisation is the name of the game as writers specialise in topics and the internet world discovers specialisations such as Search Engine Optimisation, Social Networking Reputation Monitoring and more.

As a writer it is hard enough to keep up to date with your own craft, let alone have the time or inclination to market your words so that they can reach an ever widening audience. The ultimate accolade for a writer is to be told that they have touched someone and, face it, we love praise.

As a moderately successful writer I have explored most of the online publishing sites and tools available to me – from free blogs to my own domains. Slowly I am coming to the realisation that the one thing that gives me joy, writing and crafting content, is slowly slipping away from me as I spend more and more time managing my domains, deleting spam, upgrading backends, distributing content, managing social networking and seeking advertisers.

The number of people looking for an outlet for their writing is immense and the competition for eyes continues to grow.

In my short online life I have learned two lessons:

* The power of the niche and
* The power of collaborative content

Combining the above two powerful lessons is the key to any successful site and distribution mechanism. If you can combine that with a loyal community then the chances of your content being seen, read and commented on become very high. Of course then you will also be building a loyal set of followers.

The cherry on the top would be if one could find a site that offers you your own space with the ability to customise it, editorial assistance, ongoing upgrades, search engine optimisation, social networking, marketing AND the ability to make a few rand out of advertising or the ability to promote your own business.

And I have found it – give MyZA a whirl. http://myza.co.za/about/publisher/
