Choosing a web design agency

Portfolios

The company or designer’s portfolio is a good place to start- look for originality, creativity, innovation and variation- do they work within different styles? Visit the websites in their portfolio and see whether they create an impression, are easy to use and function well.

Testimonials

The web design industy is one that relies hugely on word of mouth- ask around, and when you are narrowing it down, look for past clients testimonials as well.

Friendly and personal

Is the designer friendly and helpful and takes the time to find out about your company and your vision for your website, whilst also being able to suggest their ideas and inspire you? Your website is going to be a collaboration between you and the designer, so there must be good communication. It is a good idea to meet with them face to face if possible.

Price

Obviously, you need a company that can create the site you want within your budget, but do be realistic- if you choose a competent designer, you are not going to get a Porsche with the budget of a small car.

Make sure that all costs are detailed at the start (see “contract”), so you don’t get a surprise at the end, but that said, do also plan for extras such as photography or buying professional images.

After sales and ongoing support

Does the company offer support and help with using your web pages and any maintenance after the site is completed?

Contract

Make sure you have a contract! And read it.
